Generative Topic

I am no longer an education major, so technically, I have to common core.

Here is what I am going to do about that...
I am going to take doctrine from the Brethren about womanhood and motherhood
and consider that my common core. I will plan a lesson for Relief Society that will
take my philosophy and combine it with the "common core."

Topic:
Marriage, Womanhood and Motherhood

To create relevance:
The Sunday before have women anonymously write down questions that concern them about womanhood or motherhood.

The preparation:
Take those questions and find articles that will help shed light on some of those questions from a doctrinal standpoint.

I will post to my ward’s Facebook page and post the various questions that we are going to address and have the sisters all come with some insight to help the other sisters in relief society learn. Not only will there be a lot of great insight, but there will be a spirit throughout the room because the sisters are coming ready to learn.

Execution in class:
This class will be in a very Socratic seminar style. I will pass out paper with all of the questions and a space for them to write and open up a question for discussion. This way, I think that the class can be led by the spirit in a way that is different than having a strict lesson.

Quotes to Use:
“It is the duty of every husband and wife to obey the command given to Adam to multiply and replenish the Earth.”   -The First Presidency

“He made us enough alike to love each other, but enough different that we would need to unite our strengths and stewardship to create a whole.”   -Sheri Dew

“The most important of the Lord’s work you and I will ever do will be within the walls of your own homes.”   -Howard W. Hunter

“It is divinely ordained what a woman should do…The divine work of women involves companionship, homemaking, and motherhood.”   -Ezra Taft Benson

“We urge you to do all in your power to allow your wife to remain in the home, caring for the children while you provide for the family the best you can.”   -Howard W. Hunter

“We call upon parents to devote their best efforts to the teaching and rearing of their children in gospel principles which will keep them close to the Church. The home is the basis of a righteous life, and no other instrumentality can take its place or fulfill its essential functions in carrying forward this God-given responsibility.”   -The First Presidency

My Metaphor

For my metaphor, I chose a jewel. The reason that I chose this is because of all of the different facets that the jewel has. This reminds me that in teaching there are so many aspects to our philosophies and not only that, but there are so many different personalities that exist in a classroom. As teachers, we need to have our solid philosophy, but it is important that we are able to work with the different students that come our way because the doctrine (and tenant) is: It is about them! If we, as teachers are able to work with the different children in the way that best suits them, then we can help combat the language of oppression as talked about by Freire.

Cornerstone: Christ the Master Teacher

I looked in the Bible Dictionary to find what I could find about Christ being a teacher. In doing so,
I was able to flip through all of the topics that were appointed to Jesus Christ’s name. There were
so many, just to list a few, “Jesus Christ, Atonement through.” “Jesus Christ, Baptism of.”
“Jesus Christ Betrayal of.” “Jesus Christ, Creator.” “Jesus Christ, Relationships with the Father.”
The list continues. I looked at these and realized that this is exactly why Christ is the master teacher.
In looking at his atonement, we find the example of perfect sacrifice. Through his baptism, we find the
example of perfect obedience and the importance of the order of ordinances. In Jesus Christ,
betrayal we find the example of Jesus standing up in a world where even his disciples and friends
betrayed him. In Jesus Christ, Creator, we find an example of the powers that we have all been
endowed with. In his relationships with the Father, we find an example of a man that even being
perfect relied on the Father’s will and plan for him. He led His whole life as an example and therefore
as a teacher.

About Me

My name is Caitlin Olmstead. I was born in Valley Forge, PA and lived there until I was 14 years old. After that, I moved to Gilbert, AZ where I attended high school. In high school I participated in a lot of theater and a lot of choir. Those two activities took up much of my time there.

I came to BYU-Idaho to study Music Education with an emphasis in Choir. On my off-track I went home and got married and then my husband and I traveled around the United States working as decorative painters on different temples. After that, we returned to BYU-Idaho. When we came back I changed my major to Psychology.

I am still thrilled to learn all about the methods of education because I know that it will be helpful for me as a parent. Here I will share what has been the start of a journey of life-long teaching and learning.
